Kids At WordCamp Miami 2019

WordCamp Miami believes the next generation of WordPress users – children of today – are vital to the growth of the open web. That’s why every year we have a Kid’s Panel and a two-day Kid’s Camp for younger and older young people.

Kid’s Panel

It’s also important for experienced developers and WordPress users to know what young people are using to post content and why they are using WordPress. That’s why WCMIA over the past 4 years has had a panel of elementary to high school kids from local schools, asking them why and how they use WordPress.

(Thanks To Annejeanette Washington Collins for putting the whole panel together!).

For 2019, listen to some of their stories:

Kid’s Camp

For the sixth year in a row, WordCamp Miami is proud to offer a kid’s camp that could be it’s own separate conference. For 2019, over 100 children (not including parents and guardians) attended and learned about building a website along with participating in a full day of STEAM activities. The activities are designed to be fun and educational and the camp was operated and supervised by certified teachers and volunteers with experience in STEAM education.

New One-Day Summer Event For Kid’s/Teachers: WordPress + STEAM/STEM

Teased at WordCamp Miami, those among the WordCamp Miami and local Kid’s Camp teams will be combining forces to offer a single day conference experience exclusively for young people and educators. WordCamp Miami will help make an announcement in the coming weeks as to the location and weekend date in the summer for this conference, which will tailor it’s tracks and sessions to two groups:

Kids ages 6 to 18 will enjoy tracks and talks focused on how they can start (and grow) their coding skills, MineCraft, STEAM/STEM activities, and more.
Teachers and educators will have a section of the conference devoted to them, with a focus on how to incorporate coding, WordPress and STEAM/STEM activities into their curriculum.

“Many teachers today are underpaid and overused – they don’t have much time to learn new coding skills and then teach that to their students… one of the goals of the conference is to be able to provide in a single day a focus on particular technologies like WordPress… and then provide them materials and information so that they could walk away with a game plan for their students.

As a mom and educator, you don’t want to miss this one day camp. You children will  this opportunity to be fully engaged in WordPress and STEM Activities.” – Annejeanette Washington Collins , Teacher and organizer of the WCMIA Kid’s Panel.

“Think of it as a mini-WordCamp or conference for kids on one side, and teachers at the other. It would be great if we could get help spreading the word to get a diverse representation from both groups.” – Peta-Gaye Bisset, Certified Teacher and Founding Member of the Foundation of Excellence, a non-profit. She is running a STEAM/STEM camp this summer in Davie, FL.

What The Event Is Looking For:
– Sponsors to cover costs of snacks/lunch for approximately 100 students and additional parents/teachers/attendees.
– Volunteers and speakers to present talks and workshops to students and teachers, subjects ranging from coding (PHP, Swift, JavaScript) to how to make your own Roblox or Minecraft games.
– Spreading the word… outreach to public and private schools in the Dade/Broward (Florida) area in addition to home school communities.

If are able to help in any way, please reach out to Peta-Gaye Bisset at pbisset@foundationofexcellence.org.
